2. Detroit Red Wings

After spending 25 years making the playoffs and winning 4 Stanley Cups, the Red Wings have not made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season, when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round.

Since then, all of the Red Wings players that everyone grew up watching have retired, no longer on the team or left the NHL. Henrik Zetterberg retired, Pavel Datsyuk left for Russia, and Jimmy Howard and Justin Abdelkader both will not be returning to Detroit.

Now, the Red Wings have many new faces with Dylan Larkin now leading the way.

Also. The Pistons next draft pick will trigger a domino effect. light

While the Red Wings are still in the process of their rebuild they have a familiar face leading the revival of the Wings. Steve Yzerman, former Red Wings captain and architect of the 2020 Stanley Cup champions Tampa Bay Lighting, fans should be both excited and patient with this rebuild.

Yzerman has spent the offseason so far acquiring players on short term deals, who can then be used as trade chips during this year.  All things considered, this team is probably still two or three years away from contention.

It’s also worth noting that players have been signing with the Wings solely based on Yzerman’s presence alone. The respect that he’s warranted around the league is palpable, and the result of that has been shown with Detroit’s offseason so far.

One can only imagine what that could lead to down the line when the team is back in contending form.
