The Detroit Pistons were present for a workout held by LaMelo Ball.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN reported that LaMelo Ball held a workout for multiple team executives and coaches, with the Detroit Pistons being one of the teams present. With just under a week until the NBA Draft, this isn’t entirely surprising.

There has been growing speculation around the league that the Pistons could be interested in moving up in the order. CBS Sports proposed a trade that saw Detroit land the number one pick just a few days ago. As it stands, Ball won’t fall to them at seventh.

The other two teams that were present were the Golden State Warriors and the Charlotte Hornets. It’s widely expected that the Warriors will attempt to trade out of the pick, and the Hornets will in all likelihood end up with James Wiseman. But, you can never be too careful.

Not much is said about Detroit’s involvement or intent at the workout except the following:

"The Pistons’ presence at the workout may be an indication they feel they have the assets to trade up on draft night, as it appears unlikely Ball still will be available with the No. 7 pick."

Ball joins the list of Tyrese Haliburton, Killian Hayes, Kira Lewis Jr., R.J. Hampton, and Aaron Nesmith as players who have been confirmed to have worked out with Detroit. Michigan State’s Xavier Tillman was seen shooting around at their facility, but it may not have been a formal workout.

During media availability over the weekend, General Manager Troy Weaver expressed his genuine interest in Ball as a prospect, and said he was excited to get a chance to meet with him. Finally, he presumably got his chance.

There is certainly a world where the Pistons are able to move up in the order, but the cost of it is largely in question. There are several teams who fit the bill for Ball’s services, and Detroit likely doesn’t have the assets to out bid anyone.

We’ll know within the next week whether or not they feel he’s worth the asking price.
