Detroit Pistons: If Porter can net a 2nd rounder, what about Derrick Rose?
What could the Detroit Pistons get in a trade for Derrick Rose?
It could be more than expected, especially after the recent trade of Kevin Porter Jr. from the Cavaliers to the Rockets.
The Cavaliers had sent Porter Jr. home after he had an incident in the lockerroom that didn’t sit well with their front office.
This wasn’t the first time, so the Cavs sent Porter Jr. packing and were able to get a 2nd round pick from the Houston Rockets.
This was surprising, as Porter Jr. has not proven himself as a player and has had off-the-court issues throughout his career. But he has talent, so the Rockets were willing to take a chance.
Here was a guy who had not even played this season, just got kicked off his team who then announced they wanted to trade him, and the Cavs were still able to get a pick.
This made me wonder what the Detroit Pistons could get for Derrick Rose.
Detroit Pistons: What is Derrick Rose’s trade value?
I think there are three scenarios in which Derrick Rose could net the Pistons an asset, especially after seeing what Kevin Porter Jr. was able to get on the open market.
1. A First-Round Pick
Any team that trades for Derrick Rose on the final year of his contract is doing so because they are trying to contend and need points off the bench. Any first-round pick would be outside of the lottery, as none of the bad teams would trade for Rose. This would be the ideal situation for Detroit, as they need as many additional chances to get young talent as they can get.
2. Multiple second-round picks and a project
The Detroit Pistons will almost certainly be looking for picks if they do trade Derrick Rose, but they could opt for a package of second-rounders and a young player. No team is going to give up a top-end talent for Derrick Rose but the Pistons might be able to get someone on a two-way contract or a young prospect who hasn’t gotten playing time on a good team. A guy like Nicolas Claxton from the Nets comes to mind, but there are plenty of players out there with potential worth gambling on in a Rose trade.
3. Packaging Rose for something more
If the Detroit Pistons had their eye on a more established player, they could package Rose with a pick or another player to take a risk. A guy like Lonzo Ball comes to mind, as he is probably available. The Pistons should be combing the league for teams that need bench scoring and have a superfluous talent who might be attractive to the Pistons.
The Detroit Pistons should trade Derrick Rose before the deadline or risk losing him for nothing. The market might be more lucrative than expected and if the Pistons can start a bidding war, they should be able to get an asset.
