The Detroit Pistons are likely to trade Derrick Rose before the trade deadline.

He’s on the final year of his deal, not likely part of the long-term plans and he has some value on the trade market.

The Pistons would love to get a first-round pick back for Rose but that seems unlikely given the way the market has shaped up thus far.

Things could change and some team desperate for bench scoring might give in and toss away a first-rounder but it is pretty unlikely.

That means the Detroit Pistons are probably looking at a project player and maybe a second-round pick for Derrick Rose, which wouldn’t be a bad haul.

But what type of player should they target in a Derrick Rose trade?

Detroit Pistons: Trading Derrick Rose for a young shooter

Shooting is a premium skill in the modern NBA and the Detroit Pistons don’t have enough of it.

They are currently 19th in 3-point percentage and have only one payer (Jerami Grant) who is shooting above 40 percent from behind the arc.

Svi Mykhailiuk was supposed to be that guy but has been inconsistent, so the Pistons would love to get back a young shooter in any trade for Derrick Rose.

They could potentially target some of the players taken in the 2nd-round of last year’s draft, guys like Tyrell Terry or Sam Merrill come to mind. Neither are going to be stars but they are young shooters with upside.

Detroit Pistons: Trading Derrick Rose for a shot-blocker

Another area of need for the Detroit Pistons is shot-blocking. Jerami Grant is once again the team leader in this category and he is a wing.

The Pistons are 20th in shot-blocking in the NBA and also rank 20th in points in the paint allowed.

Detroit is giving up too many easy buckets around the rim and could use young players with some shot-blocking upside.

A guy like Reggie Perry from the Nets could have potential in this area.

The Detroit Pistons are hoping to start a bidding war for Derrick Rose, and if they do, they might get someone to overpay with a first-round draft pick.

But if that doesn’t happen, they should target some young shooters or shot-blockers who might have some upside.
