When the Detroit Pistons traded Derrick Rose it wasn’t all about what they got in return.

The Pistons were able to get project player Dennis Smith Jr. and a 2nd-round pick but it was also about opening up more bench minutes for their young players.

Smith Jr. could end up being another rehab success story for the Detroit Pistons, who have had a recent history of injecting life into the careers of guys like Christian Wood, Jerami Grant and Josh Jackson.

But the real benefit might be the extra 22 minutes of bench time the Pistons now have open for guys like Saddiq Bey, Sekou Doumbouya and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk. It’s the latter who could get the most out of the Derrick Rose trade.

Here’s how.

Pistons: Svi Mykhailiuk will have a more consistent role with Derrick Rose gone

If you look at Myhailiuk’s minutes lately it looks a bit like the stock market when things are volatile.

He was getting consistent run at the beginning of the season but since scoring 18 against the Bucks, his minutes have been sporadic.

He’s gone from two minutes to 13, then back to none, then 18, then five, then back to 18 again before getting 12 and nine minutes in the last two games.

With 22 more minutes to spread around, Mykhailiuk should get a regular role so that the Pistons can get a better idea of what he can be.

If Mykhailiuk shows that he can be a reliable long-range shooter, he has the size to be a player in the NBA and can earn himself a nice contract, which brings me to my next point.
