Detroit Pistons: Isaiah Stewart is NBA’s most underrated rookie
Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons doesn’t even appear in the top-ten on the Kia Rookie Ladder but that is about to change.
Beef Stew got his first start last night against the Pacers and put up 17 points, seven rebounds, an assist and generally made Domantas Sabonis’ night miserable with his physical style of play.
He also added two steals and a block to his best game as a rookie so far.
But this wasn’t just one game.
Stewart has been fantastic in the entire month of February, raising his averages and endearing himself to Detroit Pistons fans in the process.
Here is what he has done.
Detroit Pistons: Isaiah Stewart has dominated in February
Isaiah Stewart has played just over 96 minutes in February and has scored 40 points with 24 rebounds.
He has shot 79 percent from the field this month, knocking down 19 of his 24 shots.
His defensive intensity and basketball IQ have also been on full display, just ask any of the guys he has played against, as Stewart is establishing himself as one of the toughest, most difficult guys to play against.
It’s easy to see Stewart’s strength and veteran savvy and forget that he is just 19-years-old.
Stewart isn’t going to win Rookie of the Year, as he is not flashy and plays on a bad team, but he is doing enough right now to at least get some consideration and if he keeps this up, he will find himself in the top-five at least.
Saddiq Bey had a hot start to the season and was getting some ROY buzz but it is now teammate Stewart that has Detroit talking.
Stewart is now averaging 5.5 points and 5.3 rebounds, the latter of which places him 2nd among all rookies.
Some fans were upset when the Pistons took Stewart 16th overall but he is showing exactly what Troy Weaver saw when he made that choice.
Isaiah Stewart has been one of the best rookies in the league this season and it is time he got some recognition outside of Detroit.
