Detroit Pistons NBA Draft: 4 Players to watch heading into March
Detroit Pistons Draft: Jalen Suggs is the best player on the best team
The benefit that Suggs has along with the other college prospects is the chance to show their abilities on the biggest stage when it matters most. As a freshman, Suggs is already the most dynamic player on Gonzaga, the best team in college.
While his play may be overshadowed by the team’s success and excellent play of collegiate counterparts who play on less talented teams, do not sleep on Suggs’s elite abilities. His notoriety should skyrocket if the Zags coast through the NCAA Tournament, as most are predicting.
The 19-year-old guard is averaging 14.1 points, 4.3 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game on nearly 52 percent shooting. The numbers won’t jump off the screen, but he passes the eye test with flying colors. He’s also shown to step up in big games, scoring 27 points in their toughest test vs. Iowa back in December.
Physically, Suggs has good size for a modern point and his sneaky athleticism will propel him to take advantage of minus defenders. What he may lack in physical gifts, Suggs will make up for with his uncanny knack to make the right play at the right time.
He could easily throw up better stats for a less talented team, but his competence to defer to teammates and allow the game to come to him is beyond his years.
The team who drafts Suggs surely won’t have to worry about a system or roster fit. He will simply fit in anywhere. Losing Derrick Rose mixed with the uncertainty of Killian Hayes being the team’s playmaker of the future should allow the Pistons to take a hard look at grabbing Suggs if available.
