Detroit Pistons 2021 NBA Draft Profile: Evan Mobley
By Ari Eizen
Does Evan Mobley fit with the Detroit Pistons?
For the Detroit Pistons and all their fans, all eyes are on the future. With this year having the potential for the Pistons to have a top-five pick for the first time since 2003, the Pistons can take an elite prospect who can help move the progression up.
With Killian Hayes being the future point guard for the Pistons, on top of Saben Lee’s recent burst, the point guard spot should not be the biggest worry in this year’s draft.
Even though Isaiah Stewart has become a fan favorite over the course of this season, Evan Mobley is a clear upgrade over Stewart down low. That does not mean that Stewart will no longer be a part of the Pistons’ plan, as he has definitely proved his spot in the future core going forward.
Evan Mobley’s skills and abilities to keep opponents guessing and what he will do next can help open up opportunities for other Pistons like Jerami Grant, Saddiq Bey, and more. While many people thought the center position was dead, the past few seasons have shown the importance of having a big man who is able to stretch the court yet still dominate in the paint.
Joel Embiid is having a career year, while Nikola Jokic has joined him in the MVP conversation this year. The center position did not go extinct, it just evolved.
Now I am not saying that Mobley has the same build as those two players, but his build of a long, quick, and athletic center will probably be what most centers will look like going forward.
Mobley can be the center that helps solidify the core of the Detroit Pistons going forward. Is he a better fit with the Pistons than Cade Cunningham?
It’s likely. But at the end of the day, if the Pistons had a choice between Cunningham and Mobley, I don’t think they can go wrong.
