Detroit Pistons NBA Draft: Re-drafting the 2010’s

Detroit Pistons 2011 Draft: Pick number eight

Original pick: Brandon Knight

New pick: Kawhi Leonard

The Pistons finished the 2010-2011 season with a record of 30-52. Again, the team had the seventh-best odds in the lottery, but they fell a spot to the eighth overall pick. Detroit selected Brandon Knight, a point guard from Kentucky.

Knight is best known in Detroit for being posterized by Deandre Jordan. The 6-2 guard showed slivers of promise as a member of the Pistons, and in two years with the team, Knight averaged 13.1 points and 3.9 assists per game.

After his sophomore year in the league, Detroit shipped Knight off to Milwaukee in the Brandon Jennings trade. Knight was a serviceable player for much of his career but he found himself out of starting rotations by the age of 25.

With hindsight in mind, it is safe to say that all 14 of the teams that passed on Kawhi Leonard would select him given the chance to re-draft. Leonard has been one of the top players in the league in recent years. The 6-7 forward out of San Diego State is one of the best defenders in the league. Leonard has appeared on the All-Defensive first and second teams three times each.

Leonard has developed into a great scorer as well, and as he showed in San Antonio and Toronto, he can be the best player on a championship team.

Honorable Mentions: Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson, and Jimmy Butler
