Detroit Pistons NBA Draft: Re-drafting the 2010’s

Detroit Pistons 2015 Draft: Pick number eight

Original pick: Stanley Johnson

New pick: Devin Booker

The Pistons did not have the rights to their 2014 first-round pick. Moving on to 2015and the team’s sixth straight lottery appearance, the Pistons landed the eighth pick in the draft after going 32-50 in their first year under Stan Van Gundy. With that pick, Detroit selected Stanley Johnson out of Arizona.

Johnson drew the ire of Pistons fans as he was never able to develop into a suitable rotation player let alone a starter. Johnson was never able to develop a respectable three-point shot, in his career he shoots 29.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Johnson was a decent defender, but he was never able to put it together offensively. Detroit shipped him off to the New Orleans Pelicans in the final year of his rookie contract.

Frankly, the Pistons would probably take any of the next eight players selected after Johnson given the opportunity to re-draft. Most notably, Detroit would take Devin Booker out of Kentucky. Booker was selected 13th overall, five spots after Johnson.

Booker entered the league as a great scorer, and that is just what he has been. Booker scores 23 points per contest for his career. The two-time All-Star would have been a great first scoring option for Detroit as they looked to start competing for playoff spots in the coming years.
