Detroit Pistons NBA Draft: Re-drafting the 2010’s

Detroit Pistons 2017 Draft: Pick number 12

Original pick: Luke Kennard

New pick: Donovan Mitchell

One season removed from a playoff berth and the Detroit Pistons found themselves back in the lottery after finishing the 2016-2017 season with a record of 37-45. The team landed the 12th overall pick in the draft lottery and selected Luke Kennard out of Duke.

Kennard improved in each of his three seasons with the Pistons. The 6-5 shooting guard averaged 15.8 points for the team in his third year. Kennard was a good three-point shooter for Detroit, but he had his struggles on the defensive end of the floor. After three years with the team and a regime change at general manager, Kennard was shipped off to the Los Angeles Clippers where he joined former Pistons Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris.

Donovan Mitchell is just what Detroit could use right now. A great scoring guard. Mitchell was taken two spots after Kennard and the Louisville product has been an excellent player so far in his young career. In four seasons with the Jazz, Mitchell is already a two-time All-Star. The 6-2 Mitchell is one of the league’s brightest young stars and if the Detroit Pistons had selected him over Kennard there is a more than likely chance the Pistons are competing in the playoffs this season.
