The Detroit Pistons will have three picks in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft and could use one or more of them to take a risk on a high-ceiling, low-floor talent.

The Pistons have some glaring needs this offseason that they might be able to address with their wealth of draft picks, either by taking a few shooters in the second round or by trying to use them to move up into the first.

There is also the option to draft-and-stash an international player overseas or to take a guy you know is bound for the G-League for a year or two of development.

Another option is to take a flyer on a blue-chip talent that had a poor season, which is the case with BJ Boston from Kentucky.

Detroit Pistons: This is the season to take risks

The entire world has been disrupted the last year and a half as we all try to deal with a deadly pandemic that has fundamentally changed our way of life.

Athletes are humans too, so suffered the same as all of us, and it’s understandable that some of them weren’t able to give peak performance with an existential threat hanging over their heads.

I’m not saying we should use the strange seasons, quarantines, lack of practice and fans as an excuse for every athlete who performed poorly, but it’s also silly to act like this didn’t affect some of them adversely.

My point is that it’s hard to evaluate talent in a season like this and some of these talented prospects might have had better seasons under different circumstances.

BJ Boston is a guy that might fit into this category, as he came into the season ranked as a top wing prospect but after a nightmare season has fallen off most people’s radar.

He could offer the Detroit Pistons a chance to get a blue chip talent in the second round, which is worth the risk.
