Detroit Pistons draft picks: NBA Draft prospect Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland

Hyland’s per game statistics from this past season were:

19.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.9 steals, 0.2 blocks

He shot 53.9 percent from two-point distance, 37.1 percent from three-point range, and 86.2 percent from the free throw line.

Dynamic with the ball in his hands, Bones has shades of Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams in his game. To me, he is more Lou Will than J Crossover as he is point guard sized with shooting guard skills and JC’s handle is one of the best ever. Tough for anyone to come close to that.

Bones is squarely in the LEGIT shooter category for me as he took 7.8 attempts from downtown per game this past season—which translates to an ABSURD 54.7 percent three-point attempt rate (he was even more of a gunner as a freshmen posting an unheard of 62.8 percent three-point attempt rate). He will rain down shots on you as he fears no coverage or defense. As  we’ve written about, Bones CAN SHOOT.

Bones’ deficiencies also start with being a less than ideal passer with turnover issues. He dished out 50 assists, but gave it back to the other team 74 times as well in 2020-21. He was asked to be more of shooting guard despite being point guard sized at six foot three inches tall and 169 pounds.

This is the main reason he reminds me more of Lou Will, but like Sweet Lou I think Bones’ playmaking can be worked on slowly over the years while he continues to be a microwave.

At his weight, Bone also becomes a target to be picked on when it comes to be a defender. He’ll have to stick to guarding point guards only and whoever the smallest player out there is. He does,  however, really know how to jump passing lanes to get steals, so he is not totally without skill on D.

If you want the Detroit Pistons to take a gunner and microwave scorer then you should be calling for Bones.
