The Detroit Pistons could have another Olympian in Tokyo; almost had two

Detroit Pistons fans know Jerami Grant is headed to the Olympic Games to play for Team USA. However, he might see some a familiar face in Tokyo as a teammate might also be playing – and he almost had two.

That Jerami Grant was been named to the USA Olympic men’s basketball team has brought great excitement to Detroit Pistons. Coming off a 20-52 season, to have one of your players recognized as good enough to represent the country at the Olympics is a great shot in the arm for what had been a floundering franchise.

Then, two Pistons rookies, Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey, were picked for the USA Select team. Composed of promising young American players, they will help train the Olympic team during its training camp in Las Vegas.

To have three players recognized as good enough to be on a USA Basketball team is certainly a big kudos to the Pistons organization. The coaching, practicing and playing against top-notch competition will also do nothing but make the players better when they come back to Detroit in the fall.

But Grant might not be the only member of the Pistons whole will be in Tokyo between July 25-August 7 playing in the men’s basketball tournament. There is a good chance one of his teammate’s will join him. Grant almost had two teammates join him in Tokyo, if not for a big upset.

While some countries have already qualified for the Olympics and have their roster set, like the United States, others are still attempting to qualify or finalize their roster.

If things had gone right, Cory Joseph and Jahlil Okafor would be joining Grant as Olympians in Tokyo.
