Detroit Pistons: The Pistons want a big name to sell to their fans

If you look around at the Detroit sports’ landscape at the minute you’ll find four teams that are rebuilding. There hasn’t been much success in Detroit of late and the Pistons have arguably been the worst of the lot.

It’s been a LONG time since the Pistons had a star. Fans were so desperate for one that we actually tried to talk ourselves into Luke Kennard for a short time. We tried to get excited about a broke down Blake Griffin. We tried to convince ourselves that Andre Drummond was good.

While Jalen Green and Evan Mobley might end up being very good players, even better than Cade, who knows, they don’t have the name recognition or star power that Cunningham brings and that matters in a city that has not had a marketable superstar in a long time.

Getting the number one pick is special, and it doesn’t happen that often, especially in Detroit. Fans are hungry for a winner but we also want a star to get behind. Cunningham has the chance to be an icon in Detroit, a number one pick who brings a once-great franchise back to relevance. It’s just too good a story to pass up for a package of future picks which may not even be good.

You have to get lucky to get the number one pick and even luckier to do it in a year when there is a potential superstar. Detroit got lucky twice and is not going to just give that away.
