Should Detroit Pistons be begging to stash Begarin

The Detroit Pistons have drafted a player from France the last two years. Why not make it three in a row? Juhann Begarin is a native of Les Abymes, which is on the French island of Guadeloupe in the Lower Antilles.

Begarin is a 6-foot-6,  214-pound guard with a lot of unrealized potential. The emphasis is on unrealized. He will be just 18-years-old at the time of the draft (He will turn 19 on August 7).

Begarin can do a lot of things, shoot, pass, rebound and play defense, helped by a wingspan that is almost seven-foot. He just does not do anything, yet, especially well.

Of course, he is just 18, and instead of being in high school, like he would in the United States, he has been going against adults, playing for Paris basketball. This past season, Begarin averaged 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists (but with 2.58 turnovers a game)

According to NBA Scouting Live, Begarin has a high motor and is very athletic. Begarin is a pure combo wing. He can play the 1 thru 3 positions.

Young, flexible, with a high motor and lots of untapped potential, Begarin is certainly the type of player that the Pistons look for.

The questions on draft night will be: Where will Begarin go in the draft, and will he be willing to spend another year in Europe?

Mock drafts are really all over the board with Begarin. He has a lot of potential but he is still so young and raw.

Some have Begarin being a possible late first-round selection, others list him as mid-second round to going undrafted.

Would Begarin prefer being in Detroit or Paris next year? (Of course, we realize Detroit is a much more fun city, but this is about basketball). If he officially tells the Pistons he wants to sign a contract, they have to offer him one, or release him. If he wants to forget Paris, he probably would spend the season in the G-League.

If Begarin agrees to be ‘stashed’, in a year or two, Begarin can come over and be ready to compete for a roster spot.

Drafting and stashing would make sense with Juhann Begarin.
