The Detroit Pistons will likely choose Cade Cunningham with the first pick of the NBA Draft next week, but he is already being sold on the culture of the city.
Those who have never been to Detroit might not have a favorable image of the city, as the media would have you believe it’s a wasteland full of burning houses and that all disputes are settled by rap battle (this part is true).
While the team continues to push the “Motor City” angle for some reason, the truth is that Detroit is a city of music, art, sports and food, a city full of tough people with swagger who keep getting up, represented much more by “Motown” and “The Fist” than any car company or racist caricature.
To be fair, I don’t think fans of the Detroit Pistons care much what outsiders think because it’s always been Detroit vs. Everybody and we’re about to add Cade Cunningham to that group.
Cunningham was already spotted in Detroit catching a Tigers game and recently revealed even more about his cultural education in Detroit.
Detroit Pistons: Cade Cunningham on the culture of Detroit
If you weren’t already sold on Cade Cunningham, you will be after reading some recent answers in a Q&A as reported by our friend James Edwards III. If you are not following James and subscribing to the Athletic just to read him, then you need to get on it because he provides some of the best coverage out there.
Cunningham hasn’t even been drafted by the Detroit Pistons yet but he is already saying all the right things:
I love this. Cunningham not only recognizes that he is going to a great city but he clearly wants to be a part of it. He also seems to be in sync with GM Troy Weaver, even using one of his favorite phrases in one of his answers.
Cade Cunningham should be very excited to come to Detroit, as he has a chance to be part of something special and will be an icon in the city if he can help restore this franchise to its rightful place with the elite of the NBA.
We only have a few more days to wait, but Cade Cunningham is saying all of the right things and fans of the Pistons couldn’t be more excited to show him what the city is all about.
Detroit is about to be back and Everybody should be shook.
