Detroit Pistons: Three-point shooting/Offensive spacing needed
If the Detroit Pistons organization is looking to take the next step and secure a playoff berth, shooting will be key.
Floor spacing in today’s league is mandatory, with the high usage of pick and roll schemes. The Pistons were trending towards the bottom of the pack last season, ranking 21st in attempts at 32.9 a game and 22nd in field goals made, with 11.9 converted.
Increasing production from behind the arc will result in more winning for this young roster. They’ll need to be somewhere in the upper half of the league to help maximize their potential.
With spacing, comes efficiency and with efficiency, comes buckets. Those buckets were hard to come by last season for the Pistons, who ranked 29th in field goal attempts with 85.3 attempts per game, and 28th in field goals made with 38.7 a game. Those numbers are amongst the league lowest, placing in the bottom three in both. That kind of explains why Detroit was in the bottom of the most important category: wins.
Getting easier baskets and running in transition could help out tremendously with scoring.
Playing with a faster pace and using their youth to their advantage, scoring before defenses can get set, would vastly improve efficiency.
Look for shooting improvements from some of the younger players as they are working hard in the off-season to improve their outside shooting. Guys have the off-season and know their roles much better now.
So the leash will be shortened, nobody wants to be in Casey’s dog house. With a new contract extension, he has the backing of the Pistons management even more now.
