In case you weren’t aware, the Detroit Pistons drafted Cade Cunningham with the number one pick.

It’s safe to say that any kid growing up watching basketball wants to play in the NBA someday. Most dream of being the first overall pick, but for only a small group is this actually a possibility. Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets was one of those dreamers, and he came so close.

The Detroit Pistons’ Cade Cunningham was the only person standing in his way, and Green fell to the second overall pick. There’s no shame in being selected at number two. It’s incredibly prestigious and would be an honor for most, but Green was disappointed.

Green made it no secret that he wanted to be picked first overall, but in a recent interview with Yahoo Sports he made it clear he was thankful his dream didn’t come true because he,

"“…didn’t want to be in Detroit” because “there aren’t many things you can do in Detroit.”"

Green elaborated more and compared the city of Detroit to the G-League bubble, that had he moved to Detroit he would have hit the gym and headed home, he “wouldn’t step outside in Detroit.”

Detroit Pistons fans responded on Twitter

Detroit fans are incredibly loyal to their teams and players. Cade Cunningham and Miguel Cabrerra are beloved figures in the Motor City, one without even playing a single game. If you attack either of them, expect Detroiters to let you hear it.

If you come for the city itself, you’re making things even worse for yourself. One Twitter user summed it up in a very factual way.

Other users pointed out that fans were chanting “We want Cade,” and Jalen Green wasn’t even on Detroit fans’ radar anyway.

It was also pointed out that Cade Cunningham has already embarrassed Green in the Summer League, so Green didn’t need to embarrass himself any further, though the Houston Rockets did beat the Detroit Pistons.

Perhaps it’s best to focus on building a home in Houston instead of the one he could have had in Detroit.

Finally, anyone who hasn’t been to Detroit gets to hear the truth. Detroit is a great city, full of history, innovation, and plenty to do, not just going to the gym and your apartment.

Playing an away game is hard enough. Jalen Green made it harder on himself than it needed to be by holding a grudge against the team that took the better player, the clear-cut first pick. Houston is in the Western Conference and will only play in Detroit once this season, but Pistons fans will pay to head to Little Caesar’s Arena and make life difficult for the G-League standout.

Detroit is not the city Green wanted to be on the bad side of, but he said the wrong things. Detroit is fiercely loyal and will make sure Green knows that Cade Cunningham is beloved in the city he wanted to call home, and Green will never be welcome in Michigan.
