Detroit Pistons: Predicting Cade Cunningham’s rookie year averages
By Jacob Warfle
Since Cade Cunningham was drafted by the Detroit Pistons on July 29, there has been a steady stream of news flowing in and out of Detroit, as is expected with any number one overall NBA Draft pick.
There was Cunningham’s positive comments about Detroit, the unexpected reveal of his smaller than expected stature (is he really only 6-foot-6?), summer league high’s and low’s, a killer crossover on rival Jalen Green, and a seven three-pointer barrage to cap it all off in Las Vegas.
With the MotorCade now in Detroit, content is king. For a fanbase that for years has been grasping at straws, for anything exciting, the floodgates have now been opened.
With summer league officially over, we can now take a deep breath. Training camp is set to begin on September 28, so between now and then Pistons fans will be looking to set expectations for the upcoming season.
For Cade Cunningham, expectations will continue to be high. He is still the odds-on favorite to win rookie of the year at +210, just ahead of Jalen Green (Boo!!) at +240.
This tells us the award will be up for grabs, but, right now, the money people in Vegas believe it will be Cunningham. Going back to the late 70’s, the number one pick has won rookie of the year 17 times.
FYI, the last Pistons No. 1 overall selection, Bob Lanier, did not win Rookie of the Year in 1971. It was shared by Dave Cowens and Geoff Petrie.
I will go out on a limb and give the not-so-bold prediction that Cade Cunningham is going to be the Detroit Pistons’ first rookie of the year winner since Grant Hill in 1994-1995.
Maybe a more difficult prediction is…what will Cade’s rookie year averages look like? Let us take a a stab at it.
