After re-signing Hamidou Diallo, the Detroit Pistons need to clear a roster spot, which might mean a trade of Sekou Doumbouya.

The Pistons will have to cut or trade someone, as they already have 16 guaranteed contracts plus their two 2-way deals, so they are over the limit of players.

They could just cut a guy like Jahlil Okafor or Rodney McGruder, but they would have to eat another stack of money, and I highly doubt Troy Weaver signed McGruder just to cut him a week later.

It’s more likely that the Detroit Pistons try to make a trade, and Josh Jackson and Sekou Doumbouya are probably the most likely candidates.

Doumbouya should be easy enough to move, as he only has one more guaranteed year on his deal for $3.6 million, with the final year being a team option for $5.5 million.

The ideal trade partner for Doumbouya would be a team with cap space that can absorb his contract without sending one back and also a team that has a history of developing raw players with high upside.

There are three teams that fit this description.

Detroit Pistons: Trading Sekou Doumbouya to the San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs not only have a small amount of cap space remaining, but they are one of the best teams in the NBA at developing talent.

The only issue is that the Spurs already have a glut of forwards and probably don’t need another one, so they would only do this if they saw Doumbouya as part of their G-League team.

But that’s an expensive G-League player, so I can’t see the Spurs paying that much for a guy who is not even going to be on the roster.

I would absolutely hate it if Doumbouya ended up being good for the Spurs, so let’s forget this one.
