Detroit Pistons: Making trades is a better way to use cap space

Let’s face it, even with Cade Cunningham on board, the Pistons are never going to be top free-agent destination simply because they are not on a coast and have a state income tax.

But that doesn’t mean the Pistons can’t land a big name player, they will just have to do it the way they always have, by making trades.

Having cap space could allow the Pistons to make a trade for a guy already on a max deal without necessarily sending equal money back.

The other way cap space can be valuable is to facilitate a trade between two other teams that don’t have it.

If the Pistons can get involved in a 3-way deal, they can probably pick up some nice assets just by using their cap space make a trade possible, as Memphis has done very successfully in the past.

I don’t think the Detroit Pistons are going to lure one of the top free agents to Detroit, but they can get a nice secondary role player or load up on assets in a three-way trade.

The Detroit Pistons won’t be sitting on the sidelines next offseason, as they are going to have the cap space to be a big player in free agency and trades.
