Detroit Pistons: Ranking the Eastern Conference point guards #8-5

#8 Fred VanVleet- Toronto Raptors

VanVleet is a guy who earned his way out of the G-League to become one of the best two-way guards in the East.

He is a tough player who scores, sets up teammates, defends the position well and doesn’t turn the ball over much. He also shoots the 3-ball at a high level.

Some might find this ranking a bit too high but VanVleet has evolved into a very good player and team leader.

#7 LaMelo Ball- Charlotte Hornets

The younger Ball is the superior point guard of the two and won Rookie of the Year last season behind his combination of scoring and passing.

Unlike his brother, LaMelo is not a very good defender yet, but he does have good size and should get better. He is an electric playmaker who rebounds well and is a much-better shooter than people anticipated.

#6 Cade Cunningham- Detroit Pistons

This might seem incredibly high for a guy who hasn’t yet played a game in the NBA, but when you factor in potential and defense, I think it is warranted.

Cunningham is already a better defender than most of the guys on this list and will be a guy who can guard every position on the perimeter as well as power forwards in certain matchups.

The Detroit Pistons have another point guard in Killian Hayes who will run the offense at times, but Cunningham will be doing most of the ball handling and will end up with a higher usage rate.

Cunningham is an electric scorer who can get it done from all three levels. He is a great passer and he is already a plus defender. He has superstar written all over him, so I am sticking with my homer ranking.

#5 Kyle Lowry- Miami Heat

Kyle Lowry has been one of the most underrated players in the NBA for most of his career. Yes, he has lost a step or two, but he is still a lockdown defender, a great playmaker and a guy who can carry a team offensively.

He rebounds, shoots the 3-ball at a high rate and is exactly the type of leader you want at the point guard position.

He has the chance to take the Miami Heat back to the Eastern Conference Finals this season after finally leaving Toronto.
