So why did 3 players not play at all for the Detroit Pistons?
One factor was, they were supposedly not completely healthy. Here is the official injury report for the 76ers contest:

Now, the official injury report for the Pistons opener against San Antonio, listed the three with the same injuries that kept them out of the game nine days later. I feel bad for Walton, that is a heck of a long time to deal with a migraine.
While the three players got splinters on the bench, coach Dwane Casey had Jerami Grant play 35 minutes, and Josh Jackson 34 minutes, against the Sixers.
It was kind of odd watching an Olympic gold medal winner battle down the stretch against Michigan State’s Aaron Henry, a rookie two-way player for the Sixers.
For whatever reason, it was important to coach Dwane Casey that the Pistons win that game, and finish 2-2 in the preseason. Don’t say Detroit does not care about winning this year.
