The Detroit Pistons are still in a total rebuild, and while some pieces are falling in place it’s hard to see this entire roster staying in Michigan for much longer. There are pieces on the move, and nearly everyone on the team could be a trade piece or simply sign elsewhere as time passes on. There are some career Pistons currently playing in Detroit, but based on the franchise’s reputation of always moving players around, it’s safe to say nearly everyone will be gone sooner rather than later. From this list, I’ve excluded two-way players who haven’t received much playing time.

How long will each player be on the Detroit Pistons?

Saddiq Bey, 22 years old, under contract until 2024

By 2024, Saddiq Bey will be a key piece on a playoff-hopeful team, because by then the Pistons should finally be done rebuilding. As the second option behind Cade Cunningham and a great spot-up shooter, there’s no reason why Bey will sign elsewhere or request a trade, and the Pistons will have no reason to trade him. If both parties get along, Bey could be here for a long time, perhaps even his whole career. He has struggled this year, but is adding nuance to his offensive game that will eventually pay off.

Frank Jackson, 23 years old, under contract until 2023

After signing with Detroit two years ago, Jackson had a quiet breakout year. This season, he’s regressed a little but is still worth the small amount of money the Pistons are paying him. If Detroit wants to saddle up and give him a raise in 2023, he could also be here for a long time as a bench piece, but if not, well, expect him to sign elsewhere.

Trey Lyles, 26 years old, under contract until 2023

In seven seasons Lyles has splayed for four teams and hasn’t stuck around on any roster for over two seasons. On the Spurs, he wanted more playing time but never really got it, so he moved on to Detroit, where he has received the same amount of minutes. Lyles always struck me as a decent bench player who wants to be a starter, but he doesn’t bring enough to the table on either end to make that work. He is not a trade piece, so he’ll play in Detroit until 2023 and then find a new home elsewhere.

Cory Joseph, 30 years old, under contract until 2013

Cory Joseph has been blocking the younger guys from playing and has been putting up the same production expected from them without the high ceiling. He is a veteran leader I guess, but unlike Kelly Olynyk or Jerami Grant, he is not a starting-caliber player, even on a bad team. If he doesn’t get traded then Detroit might be the last team he plays for, he could remain unsigned in 2023 or just simply retire.
