The Detroit Pistons have lost eight in a row and currently have the worst record in the NBA, so it’s safe to say that this is a rebuilding year.

Which means any veteran on the roster could be traded as the Pistons try to collect future assets for guys who are not part of the long-term plans.

This team is being built around Cade Cunningham, so pretty much anyone else is up for grabs, though it’s unlikely that the Pistons would move on from Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey or Isaiah Stewart unless it was part of a blockbuster deal.

That is unlikely to happen, but the Pistons do have a few useful veterans that other teams might want when they are eligible to be traded. For players who signed this offseason, the magical date is December 15th.

Here are the six players the Detroit Pistons could trade after December 15th and their likelihood of being traded before the deadline.

Detroit Pistons who can be traded after December 15th

  • Frank Jackson
  • Cory Joseph
  • Saben Lee
  • Trey Lyles
  • Rodney McGruder
  • Kelly Olynyk

Of these players, I’d say that Saben Lee and Kelly Olynyk are the least likely to be traded.

When it comes to Lee, the Pistons still don’t really know what he can be and would probably like to see him more against NBA competition before considering him for a trade.

Olynyk is out for several more weeks and I think the Pistons like his fit with Cade Cunningham as a big who can stretch the floor. Olynyk would probably be the easiest to move of this group given his production and salary, but he’s also the one that might have the most value to the Pistons.

Frank Jackson is an interesting case, as he has not replicated his shooting from last season, which was the highest of his career. I can’t see the Pistons getting much for him in a trade unless he starts knocking down shots consistently, so he’s unlikely to be moved anytime soon.

Trey Lyles and Cory Joseph fall into the category of “warm veteran bodies” so if any team was desperate for healthy players, they might give up something, but it’s more likely that these two would be salary filler in a trade centered around someone else (Josh Jackson perhaps?).

Rodney McGruder has no trade value and is basically just taking up a spot at this point.

As you can see, it’s unlikely any of these guys are going to draw much return on the trade market, but if the Detroit Pistons do make a move, their salaries could become important, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these guys are not on the Pistons by the end of the season.
