The Detroit Pistons are a bad team with a good veteran player in Jerami Grant, so it makes sense that they are going to be part of trade rumors.
Grant is will also enter the final year of his contract next season, so it also makes sense that the rebuilding Pistons might want to move him to get maximum value, particularly if they have no plans to sign Grant long term.
And after losing 10 straight and holding the worst record in the NBA, those rumors have already started to fly.
Yesterday, NBA insider Chad Ford said this about the Detroit Pistons and Jerami Grant:
"“Lots of GMs expect Jerami Grant, the Pistons’ one veteran presence in the starting lineup, to be moved before the trade deadline, which would cement the Pistons as a strong favorite to end up as one of the three teams with a 14% chance of winning the draft lottery.”"
He then goes on to say that the Pistons would select center Chet Holmgren if they were to secure the number one pick. I am not sure I agree with that, as the Pistons would need a replacement for Grant if they traded him and there are some very good power forwards in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Regardless of the draft, the idea of trading Jerami Grant is going to be floated around quite a lot before the deadline, as he is the type of two-way player that could help a lot of contenders.
The question is which one has a package that might entice Detroit to move him?
Detroit Pistons: What does the trade market for Jerami Grant look like?
I am certain that there are several teams that would love to add Jerami Grant, as he is a productive player who is versatile enough to fit any rotation and he’s on a reasonable contract that extends through next season.
The Pistons would probably get more for him now considering he is not just a rental, as the team that gets him would at least have him for next season as well.
But who is that team?
Boston would love to add talent but they aren’t going to part with either of their two stars to get it and they don’t have much else the Pistons would want.
The Warriors are an option, and the Pistons would love to pry James Wiseman away, but the Warriors already have the best record in the league and may not think they need a big move with Klay Thompson set to return. Also, Wiseman is rehabbing from surgery, so may not be worth the risk for the Pistons. They have other young players in Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga, but it’s tough to make the salaries work without Wiseman.
The Lakers would love Grant but have nothing to offer.
The Hawks might have some interest if the Pistons wanted a package based around Cam Reddish, but the Hawks might not see that as enough of an upgrade.
In other words, there are teams, but there’s no clear match and the Pistons might have a hard time getting equal value in draft assets and young players without taking back some bad money, which they don’t want to do.
We’ll have much more on the Jerami Grant trade market, so stay tuned.
