Why Detroit Pistons must pass on drafting a lead guard

Cade Cunningham was the first pick in the draft this year, and he is showing why. He, along with Cleveland’s Evan Mobley and Michigan grad Franz Wagner with Orlando are seen as the main contenders for Rookie of the Year.

Cunningham is a slick ballhander who can pass or take the shot himself.  He also loves taking the big shots down the stretch. The Oklahoma State product has shown he is no bust.

So the Pistons should not draft a lead guard this upcoming draft. even if they have them rated over the others in the mix at whatever slot they get.

The Draft Pool

Luckily, this draft is top heavy with forwards and centers. In our own 2022 NBA Mock Draft, the top four players are Duke’s 6-10  forward Paolo Banchero , Gonzaga’s 7-foot center Chet Holmgren, Auburn’s 6-10 forward Jabari Smith and Purdue guard Jaden Ivey.

Of course, things can change, especially in a college season when getting enough games to properly evaluate players will be a challenge. But, for now, most draftniks feel those four have separated themselves from the pack.
