The Detroit Pistons and Deandre Ayton

Some have speculated that this means the Suns might trade starting center Deandre Ayton, as they were unable to come to an agreement on an extension in the offseason and seem reluctant to give him the max contract he desires.

I cannot see the Suns trading Ayton, as none of their other big men are nearly as good, though Jalen Smith has played well of late.

It’s possible that the cheap-o Suns will let Ayton go in free agency, and if so, the Detroit Pistons should be in hot pursuit, as he would provide the type of size, rim protection and pick-and-roll ability that they currently lack.

But the Suns are trying to win a title this season and you don’t do that by trading away one of your best players, especially when he is still under 25 and has room to improve and evolve, especially as a shooter.

I’d say an Ayton trade is a pipe dream this season, and the Detroit Pistons might not have enough to get him anyway, as they would almost certainly have to kick in more than just Jerami Grant to get it done.

The Pistons would also rightfully think that they might be able to steal him in restricted free agency anyway, in which case there is no reason to give up players to get him when money could be all it takes.

I don’t think the Suns will trade Deandre Ayton but that doesn’t mean a move isn’t coming.
