Jerami Grant trade to Mavericks is risky for the Detroit Pistons

Personally, I think the Detroit Pistons can probably find more appealing trades than this one, though this is not a bad haul.

The big problem is Hardaway Jr.’s contract and the fact that he has regressed somewhat this season.

Hardaway Jr. is signed through 2024-25, though his salary does go down every year of the deal so that he is only making just over $16 million in the final season, which may be minimum wage for an NBA rotation player the way things are going.

Hardaway Jr. is also shooting just 33 percent from long range this season after shooting just under 40 percent the two previous years.

I think he’s a fairly safe bet as a guy on a team-friendly deal who can still give you 15 points per game and puts another shooter around Cade Cunningham at the two, which is something the Pistons need.

They also get to take a chance on Josh Green, who fits the mold of the versatile and long defenders Troy Weaver seems to like.

The first-round pick gives the Pistons more assets to make future deals, and even Hardaway Jr. is a guy they could probably move for assets at some point, especially if he starts shooting more consistently.

Ultimately, the Detroit Pistons can probably do better with so many potential suitors, but this is within the range of what they can expect to get for Jerami Grant.
