The Detroit Pistons need an identity

When the Cavaliers added Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, many questioned if a team with two bigs could thrive in the modern NBA.

The answer is yes, particularly if both of them are versatile plus defenders and at least one of them can score, as Mobley has done this season.

The Cavaliers have a clear identity built around defense and currently have the number one scoring defense in the NBA.

What is the Detroit Pistons’ identity?

Detroit was hoping to have a top-10 defense this season but that has not happened. They are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the NBA. They can’t shoot. They aren’t particularly athletic and they are too small.

For the Pistons to make a leap, they have to figure out what and who they are. I am certain Troy Weaver has a vision for this team, but right now it is unclear other than they plan on building around Cade and Bey.

With the right draft and free agent acquisitions, the Pistons can find that identity, work with their strengths and make a similar jump in the standings, but it will take some amount of luck and they have to get improvement from the guys they already have.
