The Detroit Pistons signed guard Carsen Edwards to a two-year deal yesterday and he came in a made an impact just a few hours later.

Edwards is a quick, 5-foot-11 guard who was a standout at Purdue and in the G-League but hasn’t gotten much chance yet in the NBA.

The 24-year-old potentially provides something Detroit desperately needs, which is scoring, particularly 3-point shooting, as he knocked down 38 percent on over eight attempts per game this season for the Salt Lake City Stars, where he averaged nearly 27 points per game.

At this point in the season, signing a guy like Edwards is a no-brainer, as the Pistons aren’t really trying to win anyway, so this is great time to give guys like Braxton Key and Edwards extended try outs.

The details of Edwards’s contract have not yet been released, but it is likely a non-guaranteed deal, which means they can probably cut him without penalty.

But what if he plays well? Should any of the other guards on the Detroit Pistons be worried?

Here are three guys the Carsen signing could affect.

Detroit Pistons: Players who could be affected by Carsen Edwards

Cory Joseph

Veteran Cory Joseph has a player option for next season that he will probably exercise, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be on the roster.

CoJo has played well this season in a bigger role than anyone expected him to have and I do think Troy Weaver likes his veteran presence.

He also happens to be Detroit’s best 3-point shooter this season, hitting over 41 percent on the year.

Because the option is his to reject or exercise, the Detroit Pistons would likely have to trade Joseph if they didn’t think he was part of the future plans.

Trading him is definitely possible, and if Carsen Edwards plays well, CoJo could be the odd man out, as he’ll be making more money and is six years older.

But Detroit has other options if they want to keep Edwards.
