Would the Detroit Pistons try to trade for Zion Williamson?
It’s no secret that the Detroit Pistons have had trouble drawing big name free agents in the last decade, mostly because they have stunk, which leaves the Draft and trades as their main ways to get a star.
They already found one in the draft in Cade Cunningham, who is starting to become unstoppable on the offensive end and still isn’t even close to a finished product.
The Pistons also have quality role players in Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart, but would still love to pair Cade with another star, which they hope to get in the 2022 NBA Draft.
I also saw a crazy idea thrown out there recently that would land the Pistons a star via trade.
Before I get into this, I am very familiar with Fletcher’s work, and he is a guy who loves to rock the boat, so please don’t take this Tweet too seriously.
He loves to throw out fake trades (mostly to enrage Pelicans’ fans) and start discussions, so that is all this is. I am not responding to this as a rumor because it’s just a guy spitballing on Twitter.
But it’s an interesting discussion.
Zion Williamson: Superstar with a fragile foot
I should also say that I cover the Pelicans as well as the Pistons, so am WELL AWARE of Zion’s injury history, his foot issues, his overzealous stepfather and camp and the fact that he is due for an extension this offseason that will likely be massive.
But I am also well aware of how good this guy is when he is healthy. He’s as unstoppable offensively as anyone in the NBA, will get you 27 points a night efficiently and changes the ceiling of any team that he is on.
The Pelicans have been playing well without him, and the franchise has had some clashes with his camp over how to handle his injuries, so it is possible they might consider trading him, but I highly doubt it.
Injuries or not, talents like Zion don’t come along often and I think if you are New Orleans you have to roll the dice and keep him to see how this plays out, as there is nothing worse than trading a generational talent and watching him take off on another team.
But would the Detroit Pistons roll the dice on him being the star to pair with Cade Cunningham? The answer is no, but let’s talk about it anyway.
