The Detroit Pistons need an upgrade of talent at guard behind Cade Cunningham and have a number of ways to acquire it this offseason.

The Pistons will have some cap space and some have speculated that they are “planning a big-money offer” to Mavericks free-agent guard Jalen Brunson.

The Knicks are also reportedly interested, as is his current team Dallas, so the Pistons are unlikely to get into a bidding war and shouldn’t, as Brunson is a good, not great player.

The Detroit Pistons will also have a top-7 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and if they drop out of the top-3, there is a high probability that they will end up with a guard like Jaden Ivey, Bennedict Mathurin or mystery man Shaedon Sharpe.

They could also trade for a guard, as the Pistons have a trade asset in Jerami Grant and a couple of moveable contracts in Kelly Olynyk, Hamidou Diallo, Frank Jackson and Cory Joseph, depending on what happens with the latter three players’ options.

We’ve looked at several potential trade targets from various teams, and if the Detroit Pistons want to make a deal, there will certainly be one out there.

Two new names recently hit the rumor mill and both are guys the Pistons might have some level of interest in, as both would fill a need.

Detroit Pistons: Trade rumors for D’Angelo Russell and Malcolm Brogdon

NBA insider Marc Stein (SUBSCRIPTION) recently listed both D’Angelo Russell and Malcolm Brogdon as two players who could be made available in trades from their respective teams.

The 26-year-old Russell is entering the final year of his contract which will pay him $31 million before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. If the Timberwolves don’t see him as part of their long-term plans with Anthony Edwards, then it makes sense to trade him before possibly losing him for nothing.

The 29-year-old Brogdon probably became redundant when the Pacers traded for Tyrese Haliburton, especially considering Brogdon is under contract for three more seasons for a salary that escalates from $22 to 23 million.

In a vacuum, either of these guys would be a big upgrade to the Pistons’ corps of guards, but are either of them a realistic trade target?

Let’s start with Brogdon.
