The Detroit Pistons have to make a tough decision about Jerami Grant this offseason but it may get a little easier after today.

It’s NBA Draft Lottery day! The day all fans of tanking teams look forward to all season, as they finally get to find out if all that losing was worth it.

The Detroit Pistons once again have the top odds of landing the #1 pick but could drop as far as 7th if the ping pong balls don’t bounce their way.

Detroit Pistons: When is the NBA Draft Lottery?

The NBA Draft Lottery will be held in Chicago today, May 17th, and will start at 8:00 PM ET.

What are the Detroit Pistons’ lottery odds?

Here are the Pistons’ lottery odds by pick:

  • #1: 14%
  • #2: 13.4%
  • #3: 12.7%
  • #4: 12%
  • #5: 14.8%
  • #6: 26%
  • #7: 7%

So as you can see, the Detroit Pistons have a 52.1 percent chance of landing in the top-4 but their single largest odds for any pick is the 6th pick at 26 percent.

Keep your good luck charms handy and start praying to the Lottery Gods that the Pistons stay in the top-3.

What if the Detroit Pistons fall in the 2022 NBA Draft lottery? How does it affect Jerami Grant?

If the Pistons were to drop out of the top-3-4 picks of the 2022 NBA Draft, it is far more likely that they will end up selecting a guard, which means it is then less likely that Jerami Grant will be traded.

If they pick in the top-3, where there are three power forwards expected to go, it becomes more likely that they trade Jerami Grant, it’s that simple.

If the Pistons do end up with a top-3, August 9th is an important date for Jerami Grant, as teams trading for him after that won’t be able to extend him right away, which could lower his value somewhat.

2022 NBA Draft: Other picks that could affect Jerami Grant

There are two teams in the 2022 NBA Draft lottery who might want to trade for Jerami Grant. The Portland Trail Blazers have a trade exception, want to reload around Damian Lillard and Grant would be a nice fit.

But if the Trail Blazers were to jump into the top-4-5, they might see that as too high a price to pay for Grant. It is far more likely they would use that pick if it were in the 8-9 range.

Same for the New Orleans Pelicans, who are more of a long shot but are a playoff team with youth that doesn’t really need another young player. If they are picking in the 8-10 range, they too might try to use that pick to trade for Jerami Grant.

If they are in the top 4-5, probably not.

If the Detroit Pistons end up with a top-3 pick and Portland has the 8th, Jerami Grant’s time in Detroit could be limited, but if the Pistons fall and one of the potential suitors jumps up, you can expect a Grant extension by early August.
