Detroit Pistons draft: Johnny Davis’ weaknesses

Despite having such a strong frame, Davis lacks traditional end-to-end explosiveness. This speed disadvantage can pose problems on both ends with quicker guards. It also limits Davis’ ability to simply blow by defenses.

With his basketball IQ, size, and skill, Davis often found his way into the paint regardless, but there will likely be struggles adjusting to NBA athleticism. In addition, Davis will need to continue to work on his jumper at the next level, particularly from behind the three-point line. However, with solid shot mechanics, there’s reason to believe Davis will improve.

With the NBA game holding such an emphasis on three-point shooting, it’s essential that Davis continues to diversify himself as a scorer, especially without being the go-to source of offense on a roster.

Furthermore, Davis’ lack of playmaking is troubling, especially coming on to an NBA roster where he likely won’t be the main scoring option. While his lack of assists at the college level most likely stemmed just from carrying such a heavy scoring load, there’s reason for concern with such little evidence of his playmaking abilities from his time in college.
