Pistons draft: This prospect is making his case for the top-5

We know the Detroit Pistons currently have the 5th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, but it’s anyone’s guess what they will do with it.

The focus so far has been on prospects like Jaden Ivey, Shaedon Sharpe and Keegan Murray, who all have skills that would fill a need in the Pistons’ roster.

There are always a few sleeper picks, as well as prospects that make a big leap up the draft boards in the combine, and this year it looks like Dyson Daniels may be that guy.

Daniels is an Australian prospect from the G-League Ignite who has been impressing scouts and making his case for the top-5 of the 2022 NBA Draft.

Pistons draft: Dyson Daniels Strengths and weaknesses

Dyson Daniels is a 6-foot-6 guard out of the G-League who averaged 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game in his first season for the Ignite.

Daniels is a good athlete who can make plays, score from all over the court and is a plus rebounder for a guard. He has played quite a lot on the ball, so is comfortable making plays and setting up teammates.

He has the size to be a plus defender on the wing and is very good at using his length (6-foot-10 wingspan) to get into passing lanes for steals.

Dyson’s biggest question mark is his shooting, as he shot just 25 percent from 3-point range this season. G-League numbers can be difficult to gauge (shot selection is almost always questionable) and it appears his combine performance will put some of those fears to rest.

He is one of those long, slithery penetrators who can get to the rim and finish in traffic as you will see here:

Daniels is not an explosive athlete but he has the size to finish over most guards and can do it with either hand around the rim. He’s also a guy who can grab a rebound and go with it himself or make the long outlet pass.

He’s a good enough playmaker and defender on the wing, so if you add a 3-point shot to that it makes sense that he is now getting some top-5 buzz, but is he a fit on the Detroit Pistons?

2022 NBA Draft: Dyson Daniels’ fit on the Detroit Pistons

Having Cade Cunningham makes Troy Weaver’s job a little easier, as he pretty much fits with any player in the 2022 NBA Draft, including Dyson Daniels.

Daniels would give the Pistons another long playmaker on the perimeter, a guy who profiles as a 3-position defender in the NBA, who will create a lot of matchup problems on the other end with his size.

He would give the Pistons a huge backcourt and a perimeter defense that was very switchable, with all five starters (assuming Daniels won the starting job) being able to defend multiple positions.

The real question is if he can shoot the long-range shot well enough to create space or if he is going to be more of a penetrator and a mid-range scorer.

If the Detroit Pistons think he can be a good 3-point shooter at the NBA level, then his name could be thrown into the pile of big shooting guards like Bennedict Mathurin.

Daniels looks to be one of the prospects whose stock is rising at the draft combine and could be a possibility for the Detroit Pistons.
