2022 NBA Draft: Jaden Ivey’s weaknesses

In college, Ivey thrived in sharing the on-ball duties with Purdue’s other guards, but after fluctuating between point guard and shooting guard so much last season, many scouts and teams are likely to wonder what his long-term position will be.

The answer lies in the franchise that drafts him, and how they envision him developing. Regardless, Ivey will probably endure a steep learning curve for either position he plays full-time in the NBA.

Like many young, explosive guards, Ivey will have to continue to work on harnessing his athleticism, and limiting erratic mistakes. On both ends, the former Boilermaker will need to pinpoint when and how to use his explosiveness to his benefit, rather than allowing teams to use it against him by baiting him into cheap fouls, making errant passes or taking charges against him, etc.

In addition, Ivey’s continued development on his jumper will dictate a lot of his early scoring success in the NBA, and how defenses game plan against him. While he’ll likely always find ways to the rim, developing a respectable jumper, and possibly an in-between game, such as a floater or mid-range shot, will make Ivey an effective scorer, and only open further opportunities for him to get to the rim.
