Detroit Pistons: Choosing athleticism and pace in the 2022 NBA Draft
Detroit Pistons draft: How Jaden Ivey fits
With Ivey’s size, strength, and athletic ability, it’s easy to envision Ivey pairing nicely alongside Cunningham in the backcourt, and throughout the rest of the roster as well.
When watching Ivey, there are subtle shades of a young Dwyane Wade (who was also selected fifth), with an ability to play on and off the ball, a willingness to defend, and incredible athleticism that is exerted on both ends of the floor.
One important factor that could help accelerate Ivey’s development is a defined role for the Detroit Pistons. With Cade Cunningham having the point guard position locked up, Ivey would have a specific role in the offense, and while he could occasionally operate as the lead guard, he’d spend most of his minutes alongside Cunningham in what could become a dynamic backcourt.
Ivey’s arrival in Detroit could also lead to a more up tempo offense, and his tenacity on defense would play an additional role in increasing the pace of the Pistons’ offense. On defense, Ivey’s competitiveness should earn him valuable minutes, and help keep him on the floor in pivotal moments, even as a rookie.
Ivey can also defend most point guards in the NBA, which will mean Cade Cunningham won’t always be forced to chase around the smaller guy.
As the Detroit Pistons continue to build a sustainable foundation, defense will continue to serve as an important principle to future success. Adding a player of Ivey’s caliber not only fills a positional need, it brings in another player who fits within the Pistons’ culture.
As the rebuild continues to take shape, the fifth pick will grant Detroit another piece to add to their youthful roster. Selecting Ivey could bolster the Pistons on both ends, and help them take another step towards building a winning foundation.
