Detroit Pistons: 2022 NBA Draft trades with the Northwest Division

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder are one of the huge wild cards in the 2022 NBA Draft, as they have a ton of future picks and could go in almost any direction. They already have the #2 pick as well as #12 and #30 in the first round, but could use one of them to add talent at a position of need.

I can’t see the Thunder wanting any of Detroit’s players (at least ones they would give up) so a trade with them would require two trades.

Why the Thunder would do it: Is there anything more Sam Presti loves than hoarding draft picks? He has also shown a good eye for talent and may think he can get two impact players in the 2022 NBA Draft instead of one. The Thunder would do this if they weren’t super high on any of the top-3 guys and thought they could get the player they wanted anyway and pick up the 7th pick for their troubles.

Why Detroit would do it: Troy Weaver is also a good evaluator of talent, so he too might feel that he can get better value with two picks instead of one. If the Pistons truly believe there is a “Big 3” in this draft and that one of them is perfect to pair with Cade Cunningham, then it makes sense to jump up and get him, as they are less likely to find the star they need outside of the top five.

But Grant and two top-10 picks is a STEEP price just to move up, so Weaver would have to like one of those guys to turn into a superstar and think there was no chance he was going to fall to pick #5.

It would be a huge roll of the dice for the Pistons, but they need more than just role players around Cade and this would be one way for them to get the star they covet.
