The Detroit Pistons have been one of the busiest teams in the NBA this offseason as they try to bolster a roster that won just 23 games last season.

They made the big draft-day trade to acquire Jalen Duren after drafting Jaden Ivey with the 5th pick, checking off the need for a rim-protecting center and an explosive guard to pair with Cade Cunningham.

It appears as though they are going to retain Marvin Bagley III after extending the qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent.

The Pistons also took flyers on two elite shooting prospects, though neither of them are likely to end up on the full-time roster this season.

They backed all of that up with making yet another trade with the New York Knicks, offering them cap space in exchange for Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel, two second-round picks and $6 million in cash.

But with free agency upon us and only one roster spot available, the Detroit Pistons still have a strange looking roster with five guys who can play the center position (counting Bagley III).

Detroit Pistons: More trades are coming

I find it hard to believe that the Detroit Pistons are going to go into next season with a glut of big men, so we can probably expect more trades and additions in free agency.

The problem is that the Pistons currently only have one open roster spot and still have some big needs.

It’s possible they will be able to fill those needs with one guy, but if they re-sign Marvin Bagley III, that will take some roster shuffling and we could see players like Cory Joseph and Kelly Olynyk shipped out now that the Pistons added more veteran depth in the Knicks’ trade.

As the Detroit Pistons head into 2022 NBA free agency, they still have two glaring needs.
