The Detroit Pistons recently exercised their 2023-24 team option on forward Saddiq Bey, who will be in line for a big extension next offseason.

What that extension looks like will really come down to Bey, who has a lot to gain or lose this season, as a big leap could put him in line for a near max deal.

Right now, the market for Bey was probably set by the Keldon Johnson extension, which was for 4 years/$80 million with the San Antonio Spurs.

Johnson put up slightly better numbers than Saddiq Bey in his third season, so if Bey were to put up similar numbers or slightly better in his third year, I think he’ll be in line for a similar deal as Johnson.

But a new contract was announced yesterday that probably sets the ceiling for what Bey is going to get in his extension.

Detroit Pistons: How the Tyler Herro contract affects Saddiq Bey

According to Adrian Wojnarowski among others, Tyler Herro reportedly signed a big extension to remain with the Miami Heat:

If Keldon Johnson’s deal is the floor for Saddiq Bey, then the Herro deal is probably the ceiling, as Herro was the 6th Man of the Year last season after averaging 20 points, five rebounds and four assists in his third season in the league.

In his best-case scenario, Bey will get similar numbers this season, and if he does, might get closer to Herro’s contract than to Johnson’s.

If Bey scores 20+ points per game and shoots 40 percent from 3-point range as Herro did, he could be in line for a similar deal, especially when you consider that he is a better and more versatile defender than Herro.

There is a huge gap between Johnson’s contract and Herro’s and Bey will probably fall somewhere in the middle, but if he has a breakout season, Herro’s deal has now set the ceiling for the market. The rest is up to Saddiq Bey.
