Detroit Pistons preseason loser: Marvin Bagley III

Marvin Bagley III went out with an injured knee and will likely miss the first couple of weeks of the season, though there is no timetable for his return.

The injury isn’t serious according to reports, but given MBIII’s history, it’s not a great way to start the season. This is guy who has never played more than 62 games in a season (his rookie year) and has played just 13, 43 and 48 games in the last three.

Not only does Bagley III need to prove he can stay on the floor, but he has to show how he fits into this Pistons’ rotation long term, as he is really a one trick pony (inside scoring) who doesn’t defend well or spread the floor.

I am sure he is eager to prove that he was worth the contract the Detroit Pistons gave him, and he likely would have gotten a chance to start some games early in the season as coach Dwane Casey tries to figure out his rotations and depth chart.

Instead, MBIII will start the season in street clothes with his future and role still up in the air, which is a shame, as this guy has a ton of talent but has never really gotten the chance to show it either through injuries or not having a real role.

Now MBIII starts the season behind and will have to figure it out on the fly, which is not what the Pistons were hoping for in the preseason.
