Detroit Pistons preseason winner: Isaiah Stewart

There are still questions about whether Stewart is a starting center in the NBA, a power forward or whether he would be best suited as a role player off the bench.

But he showed progress in the preseason in some important areas. He showed he is not afraid to shoot the 3-point shot, and he is going to get plenty of chances if teams continue to play off him as they did for most of the preseason.

He also showed improvement on taking it to the hoop or dumping if off when the defender tries to close out.

Stew still has a long way to go on offense, as he needs to be a better screener and not just stand around the 3-point line when he doesn’t have the ball.

He also has to get much better at making defenses pay when they close out recklessly, as he has to be able to take advantage when teams start to respect his shot more.

But he hit over 38 percent of his 3-pointers on 4.5 attempts per game, which is right where the Detroit Pistons need him to be as a shooter if he is going to play with Jalen Duren, Marvin Bagley III or Nerlens Noel.

Stewart is still just 21-years-old and is already a pretty good defender, so this type of progress on offense is a great sign for his future as either a starter or “do it all” bench defender for the Pistons.
