The Detroit Pistons have gotten off to a rough start and that is putting it lightly.

They are just 3-10 after 13 games, tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference with the Hornets. Surprisingly, they aren’t the worst in the entire league, as that honor belongs to the Rockets and Lakers, who have only won two games apiece.

Lets’ first stop for a second and laugh at the Los Angeles Lakers, hahahahahahahaha. Sorry, but I hate the Lakers.

The Pistons are 0-7 on the road, which is worst in the NBA, and unlike late last season, the losses haven’t even been close.

The Detroit Pistons have the worst scoring margin in the league (by far) and are starting to get into the territory of some of the worst teams in league history.

“The Process” was a time when the 76ers were purposely losing games in order to stockpile high draft picks. You can argue all day about whether it worked, but they really only got one star out of all of that losing, so I would say putting your fans through a decade of pathetic basketball was a pretty high price to pay for Joel Embiid and no titles.

I made a “timeline for contention” last season and thought this would be the year when the Pistons turned the corner and started to compete. That hasn’t happened so far, and instead they are staring down the barrel of one of the worst seasons in team history if they don’t turn things around.

The Detroit Pistons “Process”

There is still plenty of time for the Detroit Pistons to right the ship and win some games, but when you look at their schedule, it’s not likely to happen any time soon. They will play their FOURTH back-to-back out of 14 games tonight, which is absolutely ridiculous.

In their games so far, the Pistons have a scoring margin of -10.2 points, which is by far the worst in the NBA. To put it into perspective, last year’s team had a margin of defeat of just -7.7, which is also bad.

It’s not only the worst this season, but ranks against some of the worst of “The Process” teams, which were actively trying to lose, which the Pistons are not according to their coach and GM.

Here are Philadelphia’s worst seasons during “The Process” along with their average scoring margin:

  • 2013-14: 19 wins, -10.5
  • 2014-15: 18 wins, -9
  • 2015-16: 10 wins, -10.2
  • 2016-17: 28 wins, -5.7

As you can see, the 2022-23 Detroit Pistons have the same margin of defeat as the 2015-16 76ers, a team that won 10 games and is widely considered the worst team in league history.

They are only trailing the 2013-14 Sixers in negative scoring margin, a that team won 19 games, far fewer than most people predicted for the Pistons coming into the season.

Detroit is not only losing, but they are getting blown out, and if this continues, will probably have to make some big changes to the bench and likely the coaching staff. Remember, those Philly teams were trying to lose, so the fact that the Pistons are getting beaten this badly as they claim not to be tanking is a pretty bad sign.
