Detroit Pistons: Signing Grant Williams in free agency

The only way it makes sense to give up on Bey or Stewart is if the Detroit Pistons have already decided that they aren’t going to offer one of them an extension in the offseason, when they will both be eligible for the first time.

If you aren’t going to keep one of them anyway, then you might as well start shopping for an upgrade.

But if you are, then waiting until free agency to try and sign Grant Williams makes more sense, as the Pistons have more cap space than just about any team and the Celtics are unlikely to match a big offer. If so, they would have just extended Williams already.

Theoretically, the Detroit Pistons could get Williams giving up nothing other than money, that is, if they thought he was worth it and a good fit with their other players, which is questionable.

They’d have to believe he’s the type of player who would thrive in a bigger role which is always a gamble. We know he is a hard worker who is going to give max effort, so at least there is that, but will his stats transfer to a bigger role?

There’s also the issue of fit, as he is not a true small forward, though he can defend the position better than anyone the Pistons currently have. He’d be yet another tweener forward on a team that already has a lot of them.

There is a lot to consider when it comes to Williams, which makes it less likely that he’ll be coming to the Detroit Pistons at the deadline. He could be a quality free-agent addition at the right price, but the Pistons have to have a good idea of what that is and avoid overpaying for a role player.

But keep in mind that $18-20 million isn’t what it used to be, as the cap is going to continue to rise and that will look like $12-15 million in a few years. Would you rather pay that money to Saddiq Bey or Grant Williams? There are plenty of questions that would need to be answered.
