Detroit Pistons: This could be the worst team in franchise history
The Detroit Pistons have lost 10 in a row and are sitting on 15 wins and 52 losses, good for the worst record in the entire NBA.
With lottery position at stake and injuries starting to mount, it’s not likely Detroit is going to be rattling off a string of wins anytime soon, though most of the losses in this streak have been close ones.
The question is where their next win is going to come from, as they only have one “easy” game left on the schedule against Houston and Detroit may not even be favored in that one. It’s unlikely that the Pistons will lose out, but they are still at risk of ending with the worst record in team history.
Which team has the worst record in Detroit Pistons’ franchise history?
The 2022-23 Detroit Pistons are still in the running for the worst record in team history, which is held by the 1979-1980 team that went 16-66 for the season. They weren’t much better the following year, winning just 21 games, which led to them being able to land Isiah Thomas with the second overall pick of the 1981 draft and eventually turn things around.
This year’s team just needs two more wins to ensure they don’t end up with the worst record, but the way they are playing, and with all of the injuries, that isn’t a given. Three of the worst seasons in team history have come during this current rebuild, and this season has the chance to be the worst of the three, as the Pistons will be lucky to get to 20 wins with just 15 games remaining in the season.
They do have two games in a row at home against the Pacers, and it’s always tough to beat a team twice in their own building. But then it’s at the Wizards, where the Pistons have struggled mightily, then back home for games against the Nuggets and Heat, two teams playing for playoff position.
Then on the road to Atlanta and Toronto, both winnable games, but also against teams that are fighting for seeding and desperate for a win. The Pistons then have the Bucks at home (almost an automatic loss) before a three-game road trip against OKC, Houston and Orlando that may represent their best chance to get a win.
Two more home games against the Heat and Nets (both playoff teams) before ending the season on the road against the Pacers and Bulls.
It might be tough to find two wins in those 15 games, so Detroit has some work to do if they want to avoid having the worst record in team history.
