The Detroit Pistons’ 2022-23 season is mercifully over and they are entering a pivotal offseason that could see a lot of changes.
That change got started yesterday, when Dwane Casey announced that he would not be back as head coach of the Detroit Pistons next season. This was not a surprise, as it had long been speculated that he might take a job in the front office, which is exactly what happened.
Now that the Pistons have answered the big coaching question, the focus will turn to finding his replacement and fixing this mess of a roster.
The Pistons not only need an influx of talent, but they need players who are better complements to their core, as the current roster is not a cohesive team that makes much sense.
That starts with letting some players walk, and there are at least seven that shouldn’t be back with the Detroit Pistons next season.
Detroit Pistons: Players who definitely shouldn’t be back next season
The two ways
The Pistons got nothing from their two-way contracts this season, somewhat disappointing considering their age and injuries.
Buddy Boeheim and Jared Rhoden had a cup of coffee each with the big team, but neither was able to get minutes or carve out a role for themselves other than mop-up duty.
This is an area of the organization that needs to improve next season, as we’ve seen other teams find talent in the G-League or at least use their two-ways on guys who can step in when needed.
That wasn’t the case with the Pistons, so they need to start fresh next season. Look for their second-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft to get one of those two-way spots.
