Detroit Pistons: Is this player really overrated? One person thinks so
Aside from the All-Rookie teams, the Detroit Pistons are not going to show up much in the postseason awards.
But recently The Athletic (SUBSCRIPTION) did an interesting anonymous poll of players that asked them all sorts of questions about everything from who they think the MVP is, to which coach they would least like to play for.
The players named Joel Embiid as the MVP, which was kind of surprising considering Giannis Antetokounmpo won the “Which player would you start a team with” question by a landslide.
The players also named Michael Jordan (not LeBron James) as the greatest of all time, which I thought was interesting considering most of the players know LeBron but were too young to have really seen MJ play.
But the question that caught my attention was “Who’s the most overrated player?” Only 54 of the 108 players answered the question, so it was clear that many guys were not comfortable throwing other players under the bus like this.
Shockingly, there was one player from the Detroit Pistons who got a vote, and it was not a name I was expecting.
Detroit Pistons: Killian Hayes gets one vote for most overrated
This category was won by “other,” which got 31.4 percent of the vote. Trae Young came in 2nd with 14.8 percent of the vote, which was not surprising.
But what was surprising was that the Detroit Pistons’ own Killian Hayes caught a stray and received one of the 54 votes for most overrated player.
Huh?
If you follow the Pistons closely, then you know that Killian definitely has some (how can I say this diplomatically) “enthusiastic” fans who attack anyone who lobs even the mildest criticism his way, but I figured this was confined to Pistons’ Twitter and other social media, as it’s not something I’ve encountered in the real world.
In fact, most of the time Hayes’ name is brought up, you hear words like “bust” attached to it, so I am not sure who this player is who thinks Killian Hayes is overrated, as most fans and players don’t think about him at all.
Hayes is the NBA’s worst shooter, but does get some praise for his passing and defense, but that’s from a very small group of people. It’s too bad this vote is anonymous, because I would love to know which NBA player thinks Hayes is overrated. My guess is that it’s Saben Lee, Cory Joseph, RJ Hampton or someone else who was stuck behind him on the depth chart.
Otherwise, I think Hayes is properly rated by most people as a potential backup point guard whose career with the Detroit Pistons is tenuous at best.
