3 things the next Pistons head coach must do to be successful
The Detroit Pistons need more passing, less isolation
Sharing the ball, cutting with out the ball, that’s winning basketball, and this style of play should be the identity of this team. The Pistons historically have been a team that shares the basketball and scoring duties on a night to night basis. The three championship banners hanging in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena are a testament to that team-friendly style of play.
The Pistons were just 27th in assists per game this season. Both Jaden Ivey and Bojan Bogdanovic were in the top-50 for isolation plays per game and both averaged well under a point per possession in those plays.
This made the Pistons extremely easy to gameplan for, especially late in games. The Pistons don’t have any great isolation players yet, so they need to share the ball, make the extra pass and get better shots.
This team could easily have five players averaging double digits next season and put the pressure on opposing coaches to gameplan for the team, not an individual player.
There’s plenty of work for the next head coach, but focusing on defense, transition and unselfish basketball are paramount.
